Why You Shouldn’t Put Social Media at the Top of your Website

Okay, this might ruffle a few feathers—but hear me out.

You know those cute social media icons you proudly display at the top of your website? The ones you think encourage visitors to follow you? Yeah, they’re actually doing more harm than good.

I know, wild right? But let’s talk about why.

Sending Visitors Away (Too Soon!)

Think about it: You spent all this time, money, and energy creating your website. You put effort into great copy, stunning visuals, clear CTAs, and an irresistible offer—only to literally send people off to Instagram or TikTok as soon as they land.

It’s like welcoming someone into your shop and immediately pointing them to the exit, saying, “Actually, go next door instead!”

Your Website Has ONE Job

Your site’s purpose is to convert visitors into clients or subscribers—not followers on social media. Social platforms are great for nurturing relationships, but sending visitors away too quickly means they probably won't come back. And when people leave your site, distractions are waiting: memes, reels, and endless scrolling loops (we’ve all been there).

Remember: You don’t own your followers. You do own your website traffic.

Where to Put Your Social Media Instead

Here’s the smarter way: Move your social icons to your footer. Why?

  • Visitors can still easily find you—but after they've spent time exploring your offers.

  • You’ve kept their attention on your content, guiding them toward conversion.

  • If they really want to follow, they'll scroll down. (Trust me, they will.)

The Exception to the Rule

There’s always an exception. If your business model heavily depends on social (like an influencer or content creator primarily monetizing via social), okay, put them higher—but still not first thing. Prioritize your most important action.

Quick Checklist to Fix This Right Now:

  • Move social media links/icons to your footer (or bottom of page).

  • Clearly prioritize your main call to action at the top of your site (newsletter signup, booking a call, services page).

  • Check mobile and desktop to ensure everything looks good and functions smoothly after the change.

Bottom Line

Your website should be a strategic experience, not a stepping stone to Instagram. Stop sending potential clients away. Keep visitors focused, guide them clearly, and watch your conversions climb. Trust me, your website analytics (and your bank account) will thank you later.
