How networking transformed my business

Hi! I’m Patricia, a Brand & Web designer. When I first started my design business back in 2020, I was stuck, my first branding client asked for 3 full brand identities, I quoted 250$, he asked me to lower it to 120, I accepted AND to top it all, he only paid me for 50 and still owes me 70 lol.

It was clear I needed to change my approach. The breakthrough came when I realized all the strategies I implemented in my quest to find information and learn how to do this and be successful were actually bringing me high-quality clients!

I started to analyze where were these clients coming from and why nobody had asked me for my portfolio in the past 2 years but still hired me… Weird, right?

I want to share with you the key strategies that I found played a pivotal role in this transformation and how they can help you achieve similar success.

  • Be genuine and authentic:

    Building relationships based on trust and authenticity is essential. Show genuine interest in others’ work, listen actively, and offer value where you can. People are more likely to remember and refer you if they feel a real connection.

  • Follow up and stay engaged:

    Networking doesn’t end with a handshake or a LinkedIn connection. Follow up with new contacts, keep in touch regularly, and provide updates on your work. Staying engaged helps you remain top-of-mind but also helps in developing deeper, more meaningful relationships. It takes time and effort but it's worth it.

  • Offer value and be helpful:

    Look for opportunities to offer value to your network, whether through sharing resources, providing advice, or making introductions. Being helpful without expecting immediate returns can build goodwill and strengthen your network.

  • Attend events strategically:

    Choose events that align with your industry and target audience. Be prepared with a clear introduction, a few thoughtful questions, and an open mind. The goal is to make meaningful connections, not just collect business cards.

The Impact on My Business

Networking transformed my business in several profound ways. First, it opened doors to higher-paying projects and more prestigious clients. The quality of work I started to get started to align more with my ambitions, and my portfolio reflected that growth.

Second, my client relationships became stronger and more supportive. By building genuine connections and delivering value, I earned the trust and loyalty of clients who not only returned for more work but also recommended me to others.

Lastly, networking increased my confidence. Engaging with industry leaders and peers provided me with valuable feedback and encouragement, which fueled my growth and kept me motivated.
